When it was created in 1987 by Guy Achache, Abaco was first specialized in leather belts. After an initial decent yet moderate success the brand really took off with the arrival of the founder’s wife: Raquel Achache. Originally trained as a professional make-up artist, she rapidly became the brand’s leading designer. The overall strategy was reviewed and the main line of products was then switched to trendy high-end bags.
According to Raquel, the ideal bag must have “a vintage and practical aspect”, a trendy design and comfortable features. Abaco mainly plays on colours and compositions that will seduce any lady, from active business women to the most demanding fashionistas.

Beyond the strict choice of unique colours and fabrics, the difference with other mainstream bags designers lies in the company’s point of honour in producing quality “made in France” bags, each one being made with a unique national know-how.

If Abaco’s reputation amongst leather items fanatics is justified the brand nonetheless wishes to preserve a seeming confidential aspect as it mainly grows its market shares through by word of mouth and excellent media coverage. One of its biggest customers being Vanessa Paradis (French actress and singer), who is said to have bought her husband Johnny Depp a Skull belt the day before he started shooting Pirates of the Carribean.
