Dolce & Gabbana
Behind these two names hide a man from Milan and another from Sicily, born on August 13th 1958 and November 14th 1962 respectively. They’ve revolutionized Italian fashion trough their inspiration tinted with religion, painting and movies. They mix genres and then throw in a handful of humour and baroque craziness in their creations.
In October 1985 Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana became partners in business as they were already partners in life. In March 1986, they presented their first collection for ‘real women’. In January 1990 they presented their first men’s collection with accessories and eyewear. In October 1992 they created their first fragrance for women.
Numerous celebrities have adopted their style: they designed over 1500 outfits for Madonna’s Girlie Show tour and many more for Isabella Rossellini and of course Monica Bellucci, their muse. They even designed jerseys for the Milan AC football club.
If you ask them about their influences, they’ll answer: Armani for discipline, Alaïa for craziness, Chanel for the weaving and Jean-Paul Gautier for creativity. They’ve received many ‘designer of the year’ awards from FHM readers. Today they have 83 retail locations. They’ve been separated since 1994 but still work together to this day.
The D&G universe
Defining the Dolce & Gabbana universe is not an easy task. A world made up of sensations, traditions, culture and a Mediterranean lifestyle. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have made an easily-recognized, seductive and adaptable worldwide brand out of their family names.
These two creators have turned their Italian character into their symbol. They have found a way to interpret and impose their sensual and unique style to the world. These two young creators know how the youth of today feels and draw their inspiration from them.
Hollywood stars just can’t get enough of their favourite designer duo which has undoubtedly been chosen as their leader, off the record. Madonna, Monica Bellucci, Isabella Rossellini, Kylie Minogue and Angelina Jolie can tell you all about it.
The Dolce & Gabbana woman is strong: she loves herself and knows that others love her as well. She’s a cosmopolitan woman that has seen the world but does not forget where she’s from.
She’ll wear sexy corsets or bras you can see through fabric and will put them into contrast with a masculine pin-striped suit, shirt and tie or a waistcoat. She always wears high heels so that she walks in a sexy yet feminine manner. She likes traditional Sicilian caps and will wear communion rosaries worn as a necklace. Director, teacher, housewife – whatever her job is she’s a woman before anything else.
The same goes for men.
His style says he dresses for himself and gives considerable details to the small things. He likes things that don’t simplify him. He’s free but career-driven. He’ll wear a neat pin-striped suit or just jeans and a blazer to work. He’s the one that lays down the rules, not the one that abides to them. You can smell his charisma as he imposes tradition with his cap, cardigan and everlasting white tee.
