Black Swan/White Swan
Intrigued by the ballet looks you’ve seen in the sensational film “Black Swan,” by Darren Aronofsky? Whether you like subtle or full tilt, ballet is IT!
Tell me you haven’t been swooning over this…
Natalie Portman is amazing as she brings the costumes and rich ballet tradition to life…
Word is that these fantastical designs will be exhibited at some point…so stay tuned!
This is definitely not the first time cinema and fashion have come together to tremendous success, but it’s one of the most exciting partnerships in recent memory! While we love the amazing costumes in the film, there are also great designs all over the runways.
Whether an intentional homage or not, we got a kick out of John Galliano’s ‘White Swan’ and ‘Black Swan’ confections in his Spring 2011 show for Christian Dior Haute Couture…
Ballet looks were of course a HUGE trend during the Spring/Summer 2011 shows. One of our favourite things about this trend is that it lends itself equally well to both daywear and evening wear! That these dance inspired looks work whether short or long underline the versatility, and look great with all sorts of different accessories and styling!
Oscar de la Renta’s presentation is a great example. Check out his beautiful seafoam green day dress (left) and showstopping marabou evening gown (right)!
At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld sent out so many beautiful looks, including this day to evening tulle skirt…
Clean-lined but no less stunning, here are two of our favourite looks from Proenza Schouler’s ‘Ladylike’ Spring 2011 show:
Timeless femininity, even girlishness, elegance…there’s good reason that the ballet costume itself hasn’t changed much since well, its inception! All in all, classic silhouettes, soft colours, decorations with lace or feathers and a little sparkle are always welcome whether you’re on the stage, screen, runway or the street!
And don’t forget the inspiration: Anna Pavlova, the original Prima Ballerina and no slouch in the style department herself!
